TL;DR 📣 Why you need a podcast trailer: \n
\n Yep, a Trailer Is Mandatory\nYour podcast trailer helps potential listeners get to know you and your show before they commit to becoming regulars. \nOtherwise, they will for sure spend 30 seconds max skipping through your full-length episode without really grasping its content or purpose. \nLuckily, you get the chance to introduce yourself properly. \nJust add a 2-minute appetizer to your feed marked as \"trailer\" within your hosting service. Most podcast platforms will show this episode front and center. \nYou can refresh your trailer whenever you want to (and you should). \nTherefore, check if you need a new or updated trailer: \n
✅ All yes? You're good to go. ❌ If not, please continue: \n\n First, Reflect on Your Overall Strategy\nA podcast for everyone is a podcast for no one. \nMake sure you know what your show is all about and who is it for. \nAsk yourself: \n
Try to be as clear as possible about your podcast's premise and its intended audience. Write your strategy down. \n\n Answering Those Questions\nYour trailer follows the purpose of an introduction. Like a business card or elevator pitch showcasing all the topics, hosts, dream audience, guests, and motivation behind the show. \nIncluding: \n
Optionally: \n
Don't promise anything you can't deliver on. \n\n
\n The Formal Flow\nMost podcasters follow a written script for their trailer to make sure it's info-packed (bonus points if you share real value as well). \nTry to prepare your script with spoken language, fewer nested sentences, and make some room to show your personality. \nBut don't overcomplicate. It's much more important to get to know the person behind the mic and your podcast's tone of voice than to have all possible questions about the topic or future episodes answered. \nFollow this structure: \n
Continue with recording your trailer. Smile while speaking (people will hear the difference and feel welcomed). \n\n Best Practices to Get You Inspired\nA random selection of trailers that made me press follow right away: \nWith a focus on personality… \n🎧🇬🇧 The Prof G Show With a focus on the topic… \n🎧🇬🇧 Every Little Thing By the way, this is what Apple, Spotify, and Acast recommend in terms of great trailers. \n\n
\n And Then There Is the Ratio of Trailer to Chart Positioning\nI've looked for numbers underlying the importance of podcast trailers and found this 2019 research by Dan Misener claiming: \"Successful podcasts are more likely to include trailers.\" \nHe manually counted the number of podcasts with trailers in Apple's Top 400 charts. And the higher a show ranked, the more likely it would have a trailer put in place. \nI can see why that is and highly recommend you create one for yourself. \n \n➜ Share Your Results\n\nDid you put this hack into practice?
